Explore Marfa
The first time we went to Marfa together, we had just finished a hike in Big Bend National Park where we camped overnight at the south rim before watching the sun rise over Mexico. It was Amanda’s first trip to West Texas and the first of many unforgettable trips.
When we got engaged, we knew our wedding had to be in Marfa. It takes a while to get there, but once you’re there you’ll never want to leave. The best thing to do is just to walk around. Explore. Stop in a coffee shop. Check out an art gallery. But if you’re really in need of some suggestions, check out some of our favorite places below.
Big Bend National Park
One of the most beautiful places in all of Texas, BBNP is a must-see. Whether your preference is a short hike or if you’re up for a real challenge, there’s a trail for everyone.
Be prepared, the park is about an hour and a half drive from Marfa. Pack in plenty of water (there is no drinking water access past the trailhead) and keep your eyes peeled for roadrunners and tarantulas!
Art + Culture
Part of the magic of Marfa is in the number of small art galleries you can find just walking around downtown. Many of them are in unassuming houses, so your best option for seeing them is just to grab a coffee and wander around.
If you’re hoping for something a bit more intentional, we love the Chinati Foundation, Little Reata, and Prada Marfa for anyone who hasn’t been to West Texas before.
More options are highlighted on the City of Marfa’s website.
Marfa may be in the desert, but the food scene is pretty incredible, especially considering the difficulty in getting there. Obvious favorites include Larry’s for burgers and Marfa Spirit Co for drinks. We also love The Get Go for grocery items and Cactus Liquors for cocktail supplies.
Food + Drink
Morning
The Sentinel is not only home to the Big Bend Sentinel, a local newspaper, it’s an excellent breakfast spot with great coffee and plenty of space to hang out while you plan your day.
Asters Cafe and Bakery is a necessity. Go here. Get breakfast. Sit outside.
Bitter Sugar opens a little later in the morning, but it’s a great brunch, coffee, and pastry option.
Noon
Bordo will blow your mind. We talk about the Serva with mortadella and pistachio butter like it changed our lives.
Para Llevar has delicious lunch options, great cocktails (the prickly pear margarita!), and offers a few bodega-type items if there’s something small you need during your stay.
The Waterstop is also a great brunch/lunch spot, but their hours tend to change so make sure they’re open before heading their way.
Night
We love Margaret’s so much we went twice last time we were in Marfa. The menu changes but never disappoints.
Bar Saint George is delicious and a staple in Marfa, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (although their dinner is the best).
Check out Otherside or Planet Marfa for a nightcap, depending on which atmosphere you’re looking for both have great cocktail, beer, and wine options.
